Workshop Information

Old College Location

The Old College is located on the seafront in Aberystwyth and is easily found as it is the imposing building situated near the Pier. The main entrance is found on Stryd-y-Brenin (King Street) and not on the seafront itself. Signs will direct you to the correct room when you arrive at the main entrance. Please refer to the map below for further information; the main entrance is indicated by the pointed tip of the red diamond.

Available Equipment

Two presentation computers will be available in the room itself. One will run Windows XP and will have Powerpoint (2007) and Acrobat PDF Reader available; the second will be an Apple Mac and have OpenOffice and a PDF Reader available. We recommend that people use these machines for their talks to save time. Should anybody require use of their own laptop, it can also be connected.

Wireless networking will be available throughout.

Venue

Founded in 1872, Aberystwyth University is situated in a truly outstanding location on the Mid Wales coast overlooking Cardigan Bay. The conference will take place in the Old College, a majestic building overlooking the seafront and only a two minute walk from the main centre of town. Further details about the town itself can be found on the Wikipedia page.

Accommodation

Aberystwyth has many hotels and guest houses on the seafront and throughout the town. We recommend looking at Aberystwyth Online for details of what is available. All guesthouses and hotels mentioned are in town and within easy walking distance of the Workshop venue (except for the Aberystwyth Park Lodge, which is a Motel on the outskirts of town). Please feel free to e-mail the Workshop organisers if you would like further assistance.

Directions and Campus Map

Directions to the University with downloadable maps of the town and campus can be found here.

Travel

The most convenient airports for travelling to Aberystwyth are Birmingham (BHX) and Manchester (MAN). Trains to and from Aberystwyth run every two hours directly to and from Birmingham International. Trains also go to and from Manchester Airport, but you will need to change trains.

Please be aware that Monday 4th May is a holiday in the UK. Trains on this day may operate a reduced, Sunday service and services over the whole weekend may also be disrupted due to engineering works. Our recommendation is that travelling outside of the weekend (eg: on the Friday before or the Tuesday morning) may prove more trouble-free.

Direct train times to and from BHX can be found here. Please visit our National Rail Website for further rail information.

London has several airports to choose from and may prove cheaper overall for flights; but travelling onward by rail may be less convenient depending on the airport(s) chosen. The London airports’ individual names (and airport codes) are as follows:
London (LON) – covers ALL of the London airports in one go;
London Heathrow (LHR), West London – rail link to central London, bus links to other destinations;
London Gatwick (LGW), South of London – rail link to central London and the South coast of England, some bus links to other destinations;
London Luton (LTN), North of London – rail links to London and elsewhere;
London Stansted (STN), North-East of London – rail links to London and elsewhere;
London City (LCY), Central/East London – metro links to London rail stations;

You are welcome to contact the Workshop organisers with any travel queries.
